Today is one of those days where I don’t really have much to write about. Apart from the shopping expedition on Saturday, we didn’t do much over the weekend. I made the base for what’ll become Milo ice-cream. I also attempted a mojito slushy thing; but it had too much booze in it so it didn’t freeze properly. Oh well; live and learn. It was still very drinkable though!
I planted some Curcubitace (pumpkin, watermelon, spanspek*, gem squash** and cucumbers) in a little bed at the top of the garden. There’s plenty of room up there to let the vines sprawl around.
I also made some meringues. But my oven, because it’s a gas oven, doesn’t run cool enough to bake them properly. So they tend to brown or burn a little on the bottom; but they are still gooey in the middle. Not that there’s anything wrong with that…
*I think they’re also called ‘honey melons’ or ‘cantaloupe’. They are my absolute favourite!
**Little round squash’s. Green skin, sweet yellow flesh. Delicious steamed with a bit of butter and black pepper.
I also planted a whle lot of seeds on the weekend only to read on my favorite seed site http://www.livingseeds.co.za that I should not have planted a single thing yet. ah well – still happy to play wait and see.
I tried the brittle recipe I saw float by on my twitter stream too – 300g caster sugar melted, 100g nuts mixed in & fling onto baking paper – break & serve after its cooled – the heat was too high when I melted the sugar so it has a burnt taste but we still ate it ;)
It’s a lot more temperate here than further inland. The sea keeps the temperature from being too extreme. I also saw that we have a hot week coming up so hopefully all the little seeds will sprout and grow like made so that if we do have some more cold snaps they’ll be ok.
That brittle recipe sounds yummy…I’m going to add it to my ‘to try’ folder! :)
I seriously don’t understand how you have time to do it all. I mean, I get the blogging and the cooking and the classes, and work… But Daaaaang, girl! You garden TOO!?!?!? When do you find time!?
There is seriously nothing better than home-grown melon. When it’s ripe, is the flesh green or orange? If it’s green, it’s honeydew. If it’s orange, it’s cantaloupe. May have to head out and buy myself one this afternoon.
Corrections. I throw seeds in the general direction of the ground. Apply water. After that it’s all up to Eric. My wonderful wonderful gardener who comes once a week and I am sure, despairs of me.
As for the time….well, I probably should have been studying this weekend. *shrugs*
By any chance, does Eric have a brother? :) Just kidding.
I planted this weekend too. Not melon though. Can’t stand the stuff and have too little space. But I did plant some Asian greens, cabbage, tomatoes, parsley, catnip (the neighbour’s cat dug out the last plant and dragged it away), and calendula. My veggie patch is nice and sheltered, so I’m hoping my efforts will not be in vain. Well, actually, I’m hoping for no more cold ;-)
